Roger Williams came to the colony of Rhode island in 1636. He landed in a place called Providence that was given to him by the Narragansett Indian tribe. He left the Massachusetts Bay colony after he was religiously persecuted. He declared it a place of religious freedom. Soon after that Roger Williams, William Coddington, Anne Hutchinson, John Clarke, and Philip Sherman Purchased Pocasset or other wise known as Rhode island from the Indians. Also the Portsmouth Compact was signed on March 7, 1638. This will be the first document that would cut off religious and political ties between England. It was written and signed in Boston.
